An area game set in medieval Europe. You play region cards to place abbeys and cardinals on the board. The game runs in two halves, each ending with a scoring. The regional scoring is distinctive. The player with the most abbeys in a region scores the region's abbey count. Second place scores the leader's count, third scores second's count — a chain. Chains of four or more abbeys along a road score too, as does holding the cardinal majority in two neighboring regions at once. All you do is play a card and place a piece. Yet the two kinds of pieces interlock into a dense fight. A masterpiece of area majority, remade as China in 2005 and as Han in 2014.
